Mission:
Prologue: First Steps
Location: USS Mohawk
The Bolian captain stepped off the shuttle. There was about hour before the Admiral's inspection, and he needed to see what he was working with. When he stepped off he was greeted by several members of the senior staff. Nodding to them, "Hello everyone. I wanted to come and see what we are working with. Give me a report."
The rather intimidating Caitian, the young Lieutenant Elias McEntyre, was the first to step forward. He was tall, massive, built like a linebacker with muscles staining his uniform. His tail lazily swishing back and forth behind him.
“Captain, security systems are in the final stages of updates. Phasers, torpedoes and shields are all ready for final testing. I’m hoping to run readiness and security drills as soon as final crews are aboard and settled.”
Standing at parade rest while the Captain’s shuttle docked, Telas stood calmly amongst the other senior officers, hands clasped behind his back, doing his best to exude confidence and command. When the shuttle door opened and the large Bolian Captain stepped off and asked for an update, Telas waited as the newly minted Chief of Security gave his report.
“Captain,” Telas said to the CO, briefly nodding in greeting when the Catian was done with his report. “Repairs and upgrades are underway. The Senior Chief and I have gathered all of the engineering and ops staff, gave them their orders and set them to their tasks. Our initial estimates put repair time at approximately 4 days, so we got them to work immediately. I can confidently report that we can reduce the time by approximately 24 to 30 hours. It was a welcome surprise when a 10 man S.C.E. Team showed up with orders to assist us in any way possible. So the Senior Chief and I gave them their assignments before anyone else missed them.” Telas lowered his voice conspiratorially and leaned toward Vott. “Seems like Admiral Moogana’s handiwork, sir.”
Senior Chief Isem had just stood to his side, nodding in agreement.
Vott nodded, "Good. She will be here in a hour. I want her to see us hard at work. If they are going to give us this bucket of bolts, then I want to make it the best bucket of bolts in the fleet." Turning to the Efrosian male standing off to the side, "Boatswain Na-Kaylir, how is training of the crew going?"
"So far so good captain. We have a few new recruits that needed a refresher, but nothing I can't handle." The bright blue eyes of the Efrosian were piercing and felt as if they could cut through steel, "I gave the SCE a run down of the protocols that you sent over sir."
Vott nodded, "Thank you. Lieutenant T'Schuun, status reports of Starship power systems?"
The Vulcan gave the senior officer a crisp salute. "Surprisingly in good shape. I have Ensign Ch'thir running down a glitch in the EPS conduits powering the enlisted crew mess, but apart from that, the ship seems to be in working order. Given Ch'thir's multiple limbs, and my own attention to detail, I'm estimating perhaps two to three hours before we can open the mess back up. All that being said, I wouldn't recommend powering the tractor beams up to grab anything outside 10,000 kilometers--I'm working with Mr. Macintyre to sort out some odd readings we're getting in that system."
Vott nodded, "Thank you Lieutenant. Keep working on that. Chief Mesu, how are the engines? Are we even going to be able to get past warp 5?"
"With Commander Telas's upgrades, we should be able to surpass that. I also have teams going over every system that got a retrofit. We got an old ship and it seems its recommissioning was kind of rushed." Isem gave a slight smile. "So those who are not helping implement the commander's changes, will be going over the ship with a fine tooth comb." Isem still was a bit bitter they had been stuck with this ship. A ship considered flawed and unable to exceed the speed of Warp 7.1. But this was a matter of pride. After all if a ship failed, normally the first one blamed was the Chief engineer. He refused to be blamed for that, if he was given a ship that was barely fixed when passed to him. "I do request that any issues be sent to us and we will prioritize them. I must say that getting the Commander's plan done is our priority."
"Good. I want to see this plan in action. Let's get to engineering so that you can show me." The Captain said as he signaled for the group to move to the turbolift.
::Main Engineering::
Within minutes the group stepped into main engineering. It was big but it wasn't small, the warp core sat at low power in the background of the main work area. Engineers and technicians stood around consoles doing their assigned tasks. The group walked to the main console in the center of engineering.
"Show me what we have." The Bolian said to the XO or Chief Engineer, whichever wanted to speak to the project.
"Commander? This is your plan. Be better if you lay it out there." Isem said. After all he was used to listening. And lately he had been speaking. Alot. Plus this wasn't his design. He just saw the chance it could work.
“Thank you Chief,” Telas said to Isem in his deep, cultured voice, nodding his thanks. “We have come up with a way to deal with the design flaws of the Springfield class by reinforcing and upgrading the superstructure of the dorsal aft end of the engineering section where the mission pod attaches to the ship. The flaw would cause significant amounts of vibration in the superstructure at speeds over warp 7.1, which in turn causes a misalignment of the EPS grid and the warp coils, causing a cascade error of the static warp bubble, causing it to burst and drop us out of light speed.
After some research on the latest construction materials of high earthquake regions of multiple planets within the Federation, we found the best metallurgical alloys that were very flexible, highly vibration resistant, while also containing an extremely high tensile strength.”
Telas tapped on the console and brought up a holographic image of the Mohawk and highlighted the repair areas in red. “We are also working on significant upgrades to the SIF generators on how to increase power by upgrading the EPS conduits and manifolds within the engineering section, specifically along the dorsal aspect of the ship; the ones closest to the mission pod.”
As he spoke, his hands moved on the console, the schematic changing as he discussed the modifications.
“After visually inspecting that area of the ship, we found that the pylons could be replaced relatively easily. With some creative engineering, that section can be opened up and the pylons replaced approximately within three days, thanks to the Admiral. Finally, there was a proposed upgrade to the Springfield class shuttlecraft pod that added a pair of photon torpedo launchers, one fore and aft, but was never implemented. With the Admira’s approval, the SCE is working on a new set of mission pods including the new upgrades. One should be available for our use just prior to our departure, Captain. The SCE has also advised me that three more will be made available with the next few weeks as replacements.”
After a moment the ship’s schematic disappeared and Telas stepped back into the group with the others.
The Bolian captain nodded, "Excellent. Let get it done as fast as possible. We want to get underway soon." Looking around the table, "Anything else that needs to be addressed?
“Not from me, Captain,” Telas said in his cultured voice as he shook his head briefly in the negative. “Senior officers, please report your progress to me within twelve hours”, he said to the others present. “I want to see where our progress stands by that time.” Then to the Captain he said, “ If something comes up, I will be sure to notify you, sir,” he clasped his hands behind his back, automatically assuming a ‘parade rest’ stance.
"Nothing from me. Security and Tactical will be ready for departure." The Caitian hulk spoke up from his own parade rest position besides the Commander.
"Sirs." Zack said. "We have the armory mostly ready. Will be by time the Admiral arrives. When that is done, the enlisted with me will go join the rest of security or engineering. Wherever they are needed most. I'll go through the ship to where I'm needed most and meet with all new enlisted."
"Thank you all." Looking around the room Captain Mrall nodded. "You are all dismissed if there is nothing else." The Bolian captain said crossing his arms across his chest. "We will be departing in 72 hours."
