General Overview Fiercely protective of his friends and crewmates. He can come off really harsh towards new people, as he was a marine and still holds to that way of thinking. He is demanding of the enlisted beneath him, but only because he knows they can better themselves. He can tend to be a loner and throw himself into his work. He is also still new to this Starfleet posh life. After fourteen years as a marine, then transferring to work the fleet and getting stalled at Chief Petty officer for many years, he had almost quit, but didn't want to look like he could not handle it

Personal History
Zak was the only child to a pair of humans who were enlisted personal. His father was a marine and his mother was a nurse. His father was a history buff, mostly about old American military units, and Zack became enamored with the US Marines from the 20th and 21st century. When Zack was 10 his father died in a tragic shuttle accident. His mother killed herself not even a year later, making young Zack have to live with family.

As a child he wasn’t overly smart. He had street smarts. And he was good in a fight. By the time he was 18, he had been trained in boxing and krav maga, an old Earth fighting style. He knew it would be a long shot to be an officer, so instead he joined the marines. This was when he met the love of his life, Diane. The two of them dated, when they were near each other.

While he wasn’t the smartest, he was determined. Very determined. And over the next eleven years, he pushed through his career, moving through the ranks while staying with the same unit. He became someone the top brass watched carefully. They knew he was something special.
Both him and Diane had decided to wait until one of them reached an NCO rank before getting married. And within eleven years of joining Her made it to Gunnery Sergeant first. This was followed by a dark time for him. While on a mission, with Diane as one of their medics, their ship got destroyed. He had been one of the few lucky ones who got transported out in time.

For the next two years he crawled into a bottle. He became reckless, and hostile. And the tipping point was at a bar on the edge of Federation space, he got angry at some Klingons and started a fight. In the melee, he ended up punching a Starfleet Captain. This had been a Captain that he had dealt with a lot while he was a marine, so they took care of it on board.

Zack was given more work, less free time and what little time he did have to himself, was now spent dealing with Counselors. The Officers didn’t want to see him lose his good career, so they pushed him to be a better man. His Marine career was over, he knew it and they did too. While he was getting better, and had passed the two year sober mark, he transferred to the Fleet, moving from Gunnery Sergeant, to a Chief Petty officer.

A part of him hoped that his past mistakes would stay in the past, but they didn’t. For eight years he was a master at Arms on the USS Denver. He was good at his job, and even became a model NCO. But his past hung over his head. No matter how many of the advanced classes he took to get promoted, he would be stuck as a Chief Petty Officer for nearly 7 years. Then he turned forty and got the shock of his life when a new group of Chief’s had come in, many who knew him and he was granted a promotion.

It was this point that he was moved to the Poseidon and made the Chief of the boat and the master at arms. He kept pushing himself to do better. But twice he was passed over for the Master Chief rank. Then came the borg. For a year after that he was busy getting used to a new hand and leg, before rejoining his old crew on the USS Mohawk.
